AVIEMORE, a tiny town in the Scottish Highlands, is known for the best skiing in Britain. From late November to April, the mountains have some of the best snowholding records in Scotland and the pistes are filled with winter sports enthusiasts.
As we drive down the town’s main street, the wooden lodge facades and ski shops are testimony to the area’s winter charms.
But this is autumn, and the winter blanket of snow is yet to fall on the majestic Cairngorms.
And while Aviemore may compare to the French Alps in January, in autumn, 100mph winds and driving rain remind us that this is most definitely British soil.
Undaunted, we wrap ourselves in thermal layers and waterproofs and set off fuelled by a hearty full English breakfast at our hotel, the Hilton Coylumbridge.
We meet our guide at Glenmore Lodge, Scotland’s national outdoor training centre nestling in the foothills of Cairngorm National Park.
The centre offers residential and singleday courses in rock climbing, water sports and snow sports throughout the year.
Here the guides also train top mountaineers in survival skills and mountain rescue – so we are in safe hands.
The ski runs are evident cutting across the slopes, but the mountains also have plenty to offer all year round, with spectacular scenery to enjoy.
Nigel Williams, our guide and the head of training at the centre, explains that the area sees a steady stream of visitors attracted to the area as a winter sports haven and a summer hiking destination.
But as we scale the slopes, the wind is too strong to even stay on our feet.
Battered by the elements, we reluctantly give up on reaching the peak and make our way back down to the mountain caf, where a warming hot chocolate is a suitable reward for our efforts.
Then it’s back to the hotel to kick off our boots and dry out.
The Hilton is clean and comfortable, though the dcor is a bit dated in places.
Our room takes two comfy double beds with ease and has a lovely view of the surrounding woodland.
We spend the afternoon relaxing in the small pool and sauna, with the on-site Thai massage parlour providing the perfect way to relax.
There are plenty of facilities for families, with a children’s pool and an outdoor fun area including dry ski slope and mini assault course.
Later, we take our dinner – traditional haggis and tatties – before a roaring fire in the hotel’s wooden ski lodge, the Woodshed, and soon feel ready to brave the elements again.
Next up we headed for Speyside Wildlife hide, which is tucked away in the forest and has featured on BBC’s Springwatch programme.
And it’s easy to see why the hide is so famous, as within minutes of settling down for the night we are eye-to-eye with a family of red deer.
A sett of hungry badgers and a family of woodmice later, we are treated to a glimpse of one of Scotland’s hard-to-spot creatures, the pine marten.
It is fascinating to see wild animals in such close quarters, and our knowledgeable guide fills us in on the creatures’ habits, habitats and history.
Fortunately, Sunday brings blue skies – just perfect for a ride through the forest on one or more of the Laggan Wolftrax mountain bike trails.
As a mountain biking novice, I start out with a green run and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
But I soon develop a taste for adventure and find myself braving the frantic downhills and table-top jumps of a red route. It’s tough work on your legs to get to the top of the hill.
But it’s worth it for the stunning views and the free-wheel back down.
Mud-splattered and tired, we finish the action-packed weekend with a trip to Landmark Forest Adventure Park.
The park, described as Scotland’s “theme park to be proud of” is a jungle of high-wire adventure courses, climbing walls, whiteknuckle water slides and tree-top walks. Strapped into safety harnesses, we let out our inner child as we swing about among the trees. The drop to the ground is enough to test the nerves of even the bravest high flyer in our group.
But some of us steel ourselves for the “Skydive” – a free-fall jump from a wooden platform the height of a three-storey building.
Aviemore may be famous for its skiing, but it proves a great base to enjoy all the outdoor activities that Scotland has to offer.
